Hollow Hold

The only contact point with the ground should be your lower back.

Engage your core to maintain this position, and rely less on your joints to hold the shape. This exercise targets the entire core, enhancing stability and control in your dance movements. Start by holding the position for 10 seconds and gradually increase the duration as your strength improves.

Butterfly Sit-Ups

Butterfly sit-ups are a modified version of the traditional sit-up, which specifically targets the core muscles used extensively in dance. To perform a butterfly sit-up, begin by sitting on the floor with the soles of your feet together, knees bent and pointing outward to form a butterfly wing-like shape with your legs.

Lay back flat on the ground, arms extended above your head. Using your core, lift your torso, touch your elbows to your knees at the top of the sit-up, and slowly lower yourself back down. These sit-ups are a challenging core exercise to improve your dancing skills by enhancing flexibility and contributing to fluid and controlled movements.

Russian Twists

Russian twists are a powerful exercise to engage internal and external obliques, essentially working your entire core. To perform a Russian twist, sit on the floor with your legs bent. Hold your upper body up at a 45-degree angle, maintaining a straight back. Hold your hands up and close to your body while balled into fists in front of your chest and twist your torso from side to side.

Hold a dumbbell in each hand to make it a great core-strengthening exercise. This rotational movement mimics many dance movements, strengthening your obliques. Plus, the addition of weights improves your arm strength, greatly benefiting your dancing skills.

Integrating these core exercises into your regular training routine significantly improves your dancing skills. They will enhance strength, stability, and control, allowing for more robust and expressive movements. Remember to implement ways to recover after a tough workout, like drinking water and performing recovery workouts, to prevent yourself from tiring out.

  1. I used to be able to do these before my spine surgery, however, my core is anything but strong now. For somebody who either is weaker or can’t bend easily, what would you recommend for core strength?

  4. i need to work on my core strength for sure.. i try to do cardio/dance (need to do that more regularly as well) but core exercises i tend to avoid 🙁
