Cooking a steak can be intimidating, but with a few simple steps, even beginners can cook a delicious steak. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to cook a steak for dummies:
Choose your Steak
Look for a steak that is at least 1 inch thick, with marbling (white streaks of fat) throughout the meat. A ribeye or a New York strip are good choices for beginners.
Season the Steak
Sprinkle both sides of the steak generously with salt and pepper. You can also add other seasonings, such as garlic powder or herbs, if desired.
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F.
Heat a Skillet
Heat a skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil (vegetable, canola, or grapeseed) to the skillet and swirl it around to coat the bottom.
Sear the Steak
Once the skillet is hot, carefully add the steak to the skillet. Sear the steak for about 2-3 minutes per side, until a golden brown crust forms.
Transfer to the Oven
Once the steak is seared, transfer the skillet to the preheated oven. Cook for about 5-7 minutes for a medium-rare steak, or until the internal temperature reaches 135°F.
Let the Steak Rest
Remove the skillet from the oven and transfer the steak to a cutting board. Let the steak rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
By following these steps, even beginners can cook a delicious steak. Remember to let the steak rest before slicing, as this allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat and results in a more tender and juicy steak.
This sounds so simple! Plus, it’s making my mouth water for a good, juicy steak! I’m off to the meat market now!
Thank you! I am not the best at cooking steak and want to get better.

Great guide for beginners! I especially appreciate the emphasis on steak thickness and letting it rest. The marbling tip was a helpful reminder too. Any suggestions on cooking times for different desired levels of doneness?

It is good to have a breakdown of how to properly cook steak. It seems like even people who grill out a lot can’t make a good steak. This is a great guide!
that sounds so simple. I will have to give it a try. I mostly grill the same way. It has been years since i had a good steak.
I like my steak medium rare, so I probably wouldn’t stick in it in the oven. I give it a few minutes on each side in the frying pan (turning regularly) and find I get the perfect steak (for me) every time 🙂
Lou
I have an indoor grill that I’ve been using to cook steak. I haven’t tried using the oven in cooking steak before. Thanks for the tips!
