How to be Productive Working From Home

How can I be productive when working from home when there are so many distractions? We want to share with you some tips on how to be productive working from home. Over the last decade, I have been working from home and created several successful blogs over the years so I have learned a few things to help you be successful in your work-at-home job.

How to be Productive Working From Home

Set Up A Home Office

Set up a dedicated home office typically where there are fewer distractions pulling you away from your desk. If you can’t dedicate a room, there are plenty of ways to create an office with limited space. check out these 55 small home office ideas.

Get a Comfortable Desk Chair

Invest in a comfortable desk chair since you will be spending a majority of your time at your desk when working from home. I suggest getting an Ergonomic Office Chair such as the KERDOM Home Desk Chair (aff link) on Amazon.

Keep Regular Office Hours

Do keep a set schedule of office hours. Typically, you would want to keep the same schedule that you had in the office. Keeping office hours can help you keep your work and home life separated. When you are working from home, it is easy to stay stuck in your office for a longer period of time to work on a project.

Eat Your Breakfast

Start your day off the same way that you did when you had to go into the office. Eat your breakfast preferably something with protein to help keep you feeling full longer. You will less likely be tempted to grab a snack every time you go into the kitchen.

Get Dressed in the Mornings

Get dressed as if you were going to the office each morning. I’ve heard others say that they feel more productive when they get up in the morning and get dressed. I’m guilty because I don’t dress up for “work” time. I typically wear a t-shirt and shorts. But do what you think to help make you more productive. The great thing about being dressed is you are already prepared to take a zoom call or face timing with your co-workers or boss. You don’t have to run and change clothes because you got a notice for an impromptu meeting.

Set a Routine

It is best to keep a set routine similar to what you had in the office. This will help you stay on task and get all of your tasks accomplished for the day. When there is a lack of schedule, you can get off task and completely skip some of the tasks you were supposed to do.

Take Frequent Breaks

It is important that you take a 5-minute break every hour so that you can stretch your muscles. Stretching only takes a few minutes of your time and it is something that you can do at your desk. Plus, stretching throughout the day will help reduce your aches, pain, and stiffness. When you feel your best, you are more productive at work.

Sip on Water Throughout The Day

It is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Start replacing your soda, juice, or other beverages with a glass of water. Sip on your glass of water throughout the day and refill it as needed.

Take A Lunch

Whether you are working for a corporation or for yourself, you should always take 30 minutes to an hour for lunch. Make sure that you eat a hearty lunch with plenty of protein. Also, you can use the remaining part of your lunch hour to catch up on a few household chores, start Yoga (grab your 14 day free pass here), or head outside for a power walk. Exercise is known for giving you a burst of energy and can help you overcome that mid-afternoon hump.

Keep Your Office Tidy

How long has it been since you took the time to clean up your office space? Grab some cleaning supplies and clean off your desk. Don’t forget to clean your keyboard too with some rubbing alcohol. Chances are you are breathing in a ton of dust particles “at work” especially if you have dust bunnies laying around your office. Clutter can harbor dust bunnies and increase your allergy symptoms. Clean off your desk before you stop working and leave only important papers on your desk that you will be working on the following day.

Organize Your Work Space

Take the time to organize your workspace so that you know where everything is at. When you are organized, you are actually more productive because you know exactly where things are. You are more productive when your office is organized. I also highly recommend that you either invest in a daily planner, a calendar for your desk, or even this printable daily planner (aff link).

Working from home can be very rewarding but it often means that we make unhealthy sacrifices just to earn a living. Use these tips and tricks so that you can learn how to be productive when you work from home.

  1. Getting myself dressed for work has been the biggest help working from home. If I “go” to work in my lounge clothes then I’m less motivated.
